Beautiful Like a Flower

I remember a long time ago, I went on vacation to the Black Sea. Our family friends had a few houses there that they rented to people coming over for their vacations from various parts of Russia. They let us stay at one of the houses for over a week. The daughter of the owner was a very nice, beautiful girl. Having been a few years older than me, I remember she seemed so sophisticated to me with her confidence, cool hairstyle and interesting clothes. Being around 10 years old at the time, I kind of secretly tried to copy the way she acted and the way she looked. Once when she was getting ready to go out, she came up to her mom and asked "Mom, am I beautiful? Like a flower?" I thought it sounded so cute and sincere, I stole the phrase and started asking my parents the same question.
Now after all these years, putting on this outfit reminded me of that time. These flowery pants and the casual-but-cute teal sweater truly made me feel 'beautiful like a flower.'

Life is a funny, interesting thing... The very moment you think you grabbed it by its horns, it gives you lemons. It's in that moment that you realize that the joke is on you. You try your hardest to have as much control as possible over as many things in your life as you can, and at some point one by one they start falling apart. At that same time you only have two choices: you can give up and drown in self-pity or you can make use of any situation life has put you into. Believe it or not, but there is a way out of any situation, you just have to think hard and learn how to let go. So this it exactly what I'm doing - I am letting go! Because I know for sure that as soon as you stop trying to take control over every inch and every second of your life, things just start working out for you. They say "if life gave you lemons make lemonade.” Well, the best lemonade is made of the ripest lemons that were left to soak up just enough sun. Don't try to get rid of the obstacles that life throws at you - nurture them, learn from them and then let go easily, and before you know it you will gain the most power, the most wisdom and the most freedom.

In the meantime, I did get a new hairstyle. Or rather I went back to my old hairstyle. This is the way I used to wear my hair before. It took me a year to grow out those bangs, but I felt like I was ready for this change, so I just went to the salon and told my hairdresser to chop it off without even thinking about it. Well, alright, that is not completely true - I was thinking about it for the last few weeks J

Peplum and Red

Don't you think that peplum is a wonderful trend? This little detail adds just enough femininity and charm to make any outfit fun, cute and playful. Also, bonus feature is that with the right fit and length, it is a great way to hide that unwanted tummy on days when we feel a little blown up.

I know this trend is already old news, however, I still am a big fan of colorblocking. It’s fascinating when you think about how fashion evolves throughout the ages. I remember when I was a child, you absolutely had to match your bag with your belt with your shoes. It was considered completely tasteless if the colors of those accessories even slightly disagreed, let alone if each one of them was in a completely different tone, color or pattern, which today is considered the norm. To be honest, I am very happy that today there are really no rules set in stone when it comes to fashion. That is exactly what makes it so much more fun and exciting!

A Stroll in the Park

Unfortunately this stroll did not take place today – today I’m staying in all day sneezing and couching away. Yep, I caught cold L It’s funny because ever since I moved into my NYC apartment three months ago, there wasn’t one weekend when I stayed in all day, and just a few days ago I was wondering how long more time will pass until I will feel comfortable and un-bored to spend the whole day in my apartment. Well, that time has come without warning – I simply did not have the choice, I was forced to stay in.
As for my outfit in the photos, I like this boho-chic look – I feel like it brings out a different character. This is why fashion is so wonderful – there are so many styles try out, so many things to sample, so many rules to bend. I start feeling better just thinking about it!

Exploring the City

While I am a huge fan of shopping, museums, shows, exhibitions and other cultural, educating activities that take place every single day in the city, believe it or not, one of my favorite occupations is still simply roaming around the city with no particular agenda in mind, running into new neighborhoods and trying new cafes and restaurants. It is during those mindless walks through the streets of New York that I usually explore some hidden nooks and corners and run into the most interesting, unique, sometimes weird places, things and activities. A couple of weekends ago, during one of such walks, I found myself walking through and exploring New York Chinatown and Little Italy. Both places have such individuality and character – it is hard to believe that they are located just mere footsteps from each other.

Another Blue Dress

My casual Friday pick for today was this long navy dress, that I bought a couple of years ago at one of the discount stores (Loemann's? Feline's Basement? T.J.Maxx? I don't remember - I give up!). I simply love the way it fits the body - the fabric is heavy enough but very flow-y and soft at the same time.
To change up the background, the last three pictures are of the same dress worn in Philadelphia last summer. I switched the accessories this time, but the idea is still the same. This is what I like about this dress - it's simple enough that you can play around with various accessories and different styles.
{I though this picture turned out pretty cool}
